About Tom

Tom Hess has been a devoted student of Iyengar Yoga since 1983. His passion for Iyengar Yoga stems from the ability for the average student to find the essence of yoga with help from props, alignment, and awareness. He studied to become a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, where he later taught classes.

Tom is co-owner of the Yoga Center of Chico, where he frequently teaches classes ranging from beginner to advanced in the Iyengar style. He also teaches classes at Beyond Fitness in the foothills of Paradise, where he currently lives.

The Style of Iyengar

Iyengar Yoga is a style of yoga developed by BKS Iyengar. He uses traditional yoga asanas as instruments of meditation to help integrate consciousness into the postures.

Iyengar Yoga uses props to help the student feel the qualities of the postures, even if they aren't quite be able to reach the full posture. This makes Iyengar Yoga especially suited for those with imbalances or inflexibilities. Iyengar Yoga helps to put the person back into balance again.


& Workshops

Tom teaches yoga classes and leads private sessions at the Yoga Center of Chico and Beyond Fitness in Paradise. His classes are classical Iyengar Yoga in their use of proper alignment, props, and attention to detail.
