More About Tom
Tom considers himself to be blessed early on in his discovery of yoga. His first yoga class was with a highly qualified teacher in a style of yoga that fit his personality and temperament exactly. He was hooked and he wanted more.
Tom was initially drawn to yoga as an answer to two things in his life:
1) His aching lower back pain - the result of a previous injury
2) His craving for deeper spiritual connection
Yoga proved to be the perfect remedy for his back and the pain disappeared almost completely. It also became a guiding light for Tom and has continued to serve as a great challenger and teacher of physical, intellectual, and spiritual strength.
Tom took his first yoga class in 1983 at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. His teacher was Evlaleah Howard, who taught him the basics involved in the practice and helped to set a solid foundation of understanding to guide his practice. Though he was a haphazard student who attended class once a week and then carried on with his day, Tom continued to find inspiration.
In 1984 he attended an incredibly inspiring presentation by BKS Iyengar at the first Iyengar National Convention in San Francisco. This was the beginning of the quest to deepen his yoga practice. In 1991, Tom was able to attend a conference with BKS Iyengar in San Diego. He was again charged with new inspiration and returned to San Francisco to attend weekend and night classes, training to become a teacher of Iyengar Yoga.
In 1995 Tom became a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher through the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. He continued his yoga education and studied at the Ramanani Iyengar Yoga Institute in India in 1996. In the years following, Tom continued to steep himself in the practice of teaching yoga and in 1999 moved from San Francisco to Paradise to teach Iyengar Yoga. Tom continued to deepen his own yoga training with trips to Indian, numerous workshops, and advancements in his certification with the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco.
In 2013, Tom co-founded the Yoga Center of Chico with Rex Stromness. Together, the two have brought a beautiful studio to the local community, as a place for Iyengar, Ashtanga, Dynamic Vinyasa-style Yoga, Meditation, Sound Healing, and other members of the community to come together.
Today, Tom presents yoga in a way that helps people navigate the difficulties of being human and uses yoga as a tool to teach grace, balance, and happiness in life.
